File Extension Sys

There are a number of different types of software which use the file extension suffix of ".sys", but one by far is the most commonly encountered for users of the market dominating Microsoft Windows operating system is the device driver. These files, known as 'drivers' for short, contain the code and data necessary for the Windows OS software in all of its different variants to interface with a certain piece of computer hardware. Virtually every component on each PC which runs Windows has a driver installed specifically for it, from 56k modems to disk drives. Upon the initial install, operating systems try as best they can to recognize the user's hardware automatically without any additional steps taken by the user; this is meant to streamline and simplify the installation experience.

Testimonials

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

Jo H.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

Samantha J.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

Unfortunately though, there are so many different manufacturers and configurations of different computer components that it is next to impossible to keep them all centralized. For efficiency's sake, only the more popular and widely used hardware is generally supported in the initial OS package; this leads to the inevitable situation of some users having to go out of their way to locate the correct drivers for their obscure or out of date hardware. These drivers most often come packaged for Windows in the .sys format.

More Info Regarding File Extension Sys

If you are attempting to install drivers for unrecognized hardware that you may have, keep in mind that the software that you need to install may not actually be in the form of a stand alone .sys file; often, drivers will come in a package called an 'executable' which will automatically extract and file away all appropriate files needed to get your hardware working correctly. If you purchased the computer component in question from a store and still retain the packaging, it's possible that a driver disk may be inside which can be used to install the appropriate drivers without an internet connection. If you cannot locate such a disk, download the drivers you need from the official website of your hardware's manufacturer. Beware of executable and .sys files which don't come from trusted sources; the possibility of harm coming to your computer through malicious code within these files exists. When downloading drivers from web sites, make sure to download the latest ones available. If your hardware is working correctly, occasionally for some users installing a new device driver file for that hardware will cause it to act unexpectedly, so don't fix what isn't broken!

The .sys extension has also been used for other file types, such as MS-DOS system configuration files. MS-DOS was what is called the 'kernel' of the Windows operating system for some time. The first versions of Windows as we know it had DOS at their core; Windows was actually a program which ran as a graphical user interface on top of the platform. Development of this software platform ended in the year 2000. In current versions of Windows, there are some important .sys files in the main system directory which should not be changed or moved. They do not serve the same function as device drivers, but are more like to system wide configuration files.

There are various other incidences which have used the .sys label, but most of them are too old or obscure to be relevant. For example, the Sony Playstation video game console used the .sys notation to identify its save file icons, and another example is a report of another similar case for the PDP-10 mainframe computer of the 60s. The average user will not deal with these on a regular basis, and unlikely ever.

It should be noted that .sys driver files contain many different types of data, and are not human readable or editable in a text editor. If you are unsure about a .sys file in a strange location in your computer outside of your system and driver directories, it would be wise to err on the side of caution and avoid opening it. Only use .sys files from a trusted and credible source. If you are experiencing errors when you attempt to install the file, it is possible that it may be corrupted. Try obtaining a fresh copy of the file that you're dealing with, and if possible from a different source. This will help to eliminate the possibility that the file is damaged at the location it's being accessed from.
